Blast-One Weekly Tips
Tip #43
How long should my blast pot last?

Over the last 35 years we have been analysing the successes and failures of thousands of contractors across the globe, from Adelaide to New York!

One alarming variable is the time that a standard 600lb/6.5cuft pot takes to empty.

It's somewhere between 12.5 minutes to 3.5 hours...

This makes an incredible difference on the cost and profitability of every job. We recommend that you as a contractor should time how long your pot takes to empty at the start of a job and then again partway through the job to check that your system is not wasting abrasive, time and money. To get a comparable and meaningful measurement, you need to ensure that the blaster is blasting a large tank, bridge or structure which allows him to blast continuously.

The largest factors that affect pot blasting time/abrasive consumption are:
  • Type of abrasive
  • Size of abrasive
  • Type of metering valves
  • Metering valve adjustment
  • Condition and size of pusherlines
  • Moisture problems (always use the correct size AirPrep)
  • Size of blast hose
  • Size of nozzles (increase the velocity of the abrasive)
  • Nozzle pressure

Let us share some statistics we have gathered on over 4,000 job sites we have attended in the USA during the last 3 years. In the chart below we are comparing the abrasive consumption of NewSteel garnet and medium slag:
