How to select the correct paint spray pump for your job

Which spray pump for which job? Mostly it’s a quick and easy decision, but occasionally a tricky job comes along – long runs of hose, need to have multiple operators, a heavier coating, etc. To help you make the decision which pump to use in these instances, we have put together a Pump Selection Guide that takes into consideration all the variables of spraying industrial coatings. Need assistance in making the decision? Phone our sales team on 1800 190 190 today.

To help you choose the correct pump for your spray project we have provided a 'Pressure Loss Calculator' to make the process easier.

Pumps

Step 1: Consult the paint manufacturer’s technical data sheet.(Example pictured below)

Technical Data Sheet

Step 2: From the data sheet find the recommended spraying pressure.

Step 3: From the data sheet find the coating pot life.

Step 4: Decide how many guns you will be running – Enter quantity into pressure loss calculator.

Step 5: Decide how many lengths of hose you will be using – Enter quantity into pressure loss calculator.

Step 6: Decide number of swivels – Enter quantity into pressure loss calculator.

Step 7: Decide number of fittings – Enter quantity into pressure loss calculator.

Step 8: Calculate vertical rise from pump to gun – Enter distance into pressure loss calculator.

Step 9: Add pressure loss to paint manufacturers recommended spraying pressure to ensure preferred pump has sufficient maximum pressure.

Step 10: Decide on power source

Step 11: Determine litres per minute flow rate required

Step 12: Cross reference above data with pump selection guide

NB: Some high viscosity coatings may require heating and/or a ram pump to assist with flow.
